Cindy's Story
My name is Cindy and I’m a single mother raising 2 girls. We became homeless in 2008. We were homeless for over a year. We lived with my sister for a few months until she evicted us due to inadequate living space. We then stayed with friends for a few weeks here and there.
At the beginning of our homelessness I started going to the Department of Human Services. At that time DHS recommended that I go to the family shelter here in Fort Morgan. She told me that I would need to go to Caring Ministries to see if there was an opening at the Kathy Thompson Family Shelter because sometimes it is full. Pam, who’s a case manager at the family shelter, told me if I can get to the shelter by 6:00 pm we would have a space. I knew that if I didn’t change my life at that time, at that moment, that there was no hope for my family. This is the only family shelter within miles so I know I had to take the chance.
Caring Ministries gave me the opportunity to focus on recovery from domestic violence and homelessness. We stayed at the Kathy Thompson Family Shelter for 3 months until I had enough money saved to qualify for housing assistance.
I had been on the Housing Authority waiting list for 1 1/2 years when I finally received my Section 8 certificate. I heard from various people that the waiting list for low-income housing could take up to 2 years, but I didn’t let that discourage me. I kept looking and waiting; against all odds I was determined. Within weeks, like a miracle, I found a two bedroom apartment.
My family and I are so blessed to be in an apartment and have our own living space. It has taken time for us to adjust from homelessness, it’s not easy. Sometimes I am fearful that I am going to lose my housing. I don’t feel that the experience of homelessness just goes away. Homelessness is one thing we will never forget. It’s wonderful to know that a year has passed and we are still in our home. There were many people that gave me strength and hope over the years. Without their support who knows what might have happened.
